Backwards Movie Bucket List

Awesome backwards movies featuring a thriller, a drama, a suspense and a couple of rom coms that leave you thinking for hours afterwards.

{Dramatic} The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button is the story of man who lives his life aging backwards.

Brad Pitt is Benjamin Button, who begins life as a tiny elderly man, blossoms into middle age and finally becomes young.

He lives in New Orleans where he meets the girl of his dreams (played by Cate Blanchett) with whom he shares a few blissful years until aging differently sends them in opposite directions.

Movie is interesting in its use of makeup artists, special-effects wizards and body doubles to make Benjamin Button age in reverse.

{Thriller} Memento

Memento is a movie where the story begins at the end and jumps backward in time in 10-minute segments.

The suspense lies not in discovering what happens but in finding out why it happened.

Memento achieves edge-of-your-seat excitement as it moves backwards, and it keeps your brain hopping as cause and effect are pieced together to a mind blowing twist at the end.

Directed by Christopher Nolan (Inception, The Dark Knight, The Prestige, Batman Begins, Insomnia) with Guy Pearce (L.A. Confidential), Carrie Ann Moss and Joe Pantoliano (both from The Matrix). Pearce plays Leonard Shelby as man obsessed with hunting down whoever raped and murdered his wife. The problem is that the incident affects his ability to make new memories. Unable to retain a location, a face, or a new clue on his own, Leonard continues his search with the help of notes, Polaroids, and even homemade tattoos for vital information.

{Suspense} Identity

Identity uses a reverse narrative in an interesting way.

Ten strangers with secrets are brought together in a savage rainstorm: A limo driver (John Cusack), an ’80s TV star (Rebecca DeMornay), a cop (Ray Liotta) who is transporting a killer (Jake Busey), a call girl (Amanda Peet), a pair of newlyweds (Clea DuVall and William Lee Scott) and a family in crisis (John C. McGinley, Leila Kenzle, Bret Loehr).

All take shelter at a desolate motel run by a nervous night manager (John Hawkes). Relief in finding shelter is quickly replaced with fear as the ten travelers begin to die, one by one. They soon realize that, if they are to survive, they’ll have to uncover the secret that has brought them together.

{Rom Com} 500 Days of Summer

500 Days of Summer isn’t told in reverse chronology, it is looking back in time at specific days in a 500 day romance.

Tom (Gordon-Levitt) is an aspiring architect who currently earns his living as a greeting card writer. Upon encountering his boss’ beautiful new secretary, Summer (Deschanel), Tom discovers that the pair have plenty in common despite the fact that she’s seemingly out of his league; for starters, they both love the Smiths, and they’re both fans of surrealist artist Magritte.

Before long Tom is smitten. All he can think about is Summer. Tom believes deeply in the concept of soul mates, and he’s finally found his. Unfortunately for Tom, Summer sees true love as the stuff of fairy tales, and isn’t looking for romance.

Undeterred by his lover’s casual stance on relationships, Tom summons all of his might and courage to pursue Summer and convince her that their love is real.

{Sci Fi Romance} Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind

Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind features the guy looking back over his romance.

Joel Barish (Jim Carrey), is informed that his ex-girlfriend Clementine (Kate Winslet) has had her memories of their relationship erased from her brain via an experimental procedure performed by Dr. Mierzwiak (Tom Wilkinson). Not to be outdone, Joel decides to have the same procedure done to himself.

As Mierzwiak’s bumbling underlings Stan (Mark Ruffalo) and Patrick (Elijah Wood) perform the operation on him in his apartment, Joel decides to try to save the memories of Clementine from being deleted.

Interesting plot twists from the brilliant mind of screenwriter Charlie Kaufman.

{Sci Fi Comedy/Adventure} Back to the Future

Back to the Future is a movie trilogy where a teenager is sent back in time, first by accident, then later to fix the mistakes made by his visit.

In this 1980s sci-fi classic, small-town California teen Marty McFly is thrown back into the ’50s when an experiment by his eccentric scientist friend Doc Brown goes awry.

Traveling through time in a modified DeLorean car, Marty encounters young versions of his parents, and must make sure that they fall in love or he’ll cease to exist. Even more dauntingly, Marty has to return to his own time and save the life of Doc Brown.

back to the future movie

Back to the Future is a trilogy. You can make it an all day thing & watch all 3!

This movie is rated for children 7+, so it is suitable for a family night movie or a children’s backwards party.

Our family would have a “family only weekend” where we would all stay home and reconnect. My husband would drag a queen size mattress into the living room, and we would all picnic, talk, watch movies and have a slumber party together on the mattress and couches watching a trilogy like Back to the Future, Lord of the Rings or Star Wars. (I think the dog loved these weekends the best: everyone eating and sleeping on the floor with him!)
