baking cookies on national cookie day

First, a History of Cookies

nabisco barnum's animal crackers“Cookie” is derived from the Dutch word “koekje,” which means little cake. Dutch bakers used to test oven temperatures on small amounts of batter to ensure that that they were ready for baking cakes. I wonder how long it took before someone ate one and said “You know, these aren’t too bad!”

Nabisco Barnum Animal Crackers were the first commercially produced cookie in the US, first introduced Christmas 1902. Now we spend more than $550 million on Oreos per year!

The most popular homebaked cookie is the Chocolate Chip Cookie.

keep it simple

pillsbury christmas cookiesI like to start with the absolute easiest way to put more fun in your day, so here it is!

Baking with the kids is suppoesed to be fun family time so don’t feel that you have to be mixin’ and stirrin’ and messin’ up the kitchen. Keep it simple by baking premade dough cookies and focusing on the “togetherness.”

Want More?

Just spread premade icing or Nutella on the backside of a cookie, cover the spread with the backside of another cookie and squish so it oozes just a little (kids love this part!), then roll in sprinkles on a plate.

Now you have very pretty, very DIY Christmas cookies.

You can pipe icing on your cookies, “flood” them with thinner icing that dries hard or decorate with fondant icing.

(If you can make things out of playdough with your kids, you can make fondant decorations!)

For more information on how to use the different types of icing, see our article Icing 101.

Here’s a quick overview to show you just how easy it is:

Have you seen the cakes in the grocery store that have family photos on them? Now you can put photos on edible paper using your HOME PRINTER!

The Edible Ink Cartridges are available for Epson2 or Canon3 printers. You also need the 8″x10.5″ Printable Frosting Sheets 4.

Just print your photo as usual using the edible products. Apply icing to the cookie where you want the photo. (This is the glue that holds the photo on.) Apply the photo – no pressure required. Pipe a frame around the photo if desired.

Christmas cookies with your family Christmas photos on them make fantastic gifts to give to your family, friends & neighbors!

I hope you feel inspired to bake up a batch Christmas Cookies to fill tummies with goodies and hearts with Christmas joy.
