How to create an interesting party invitation to excite your guests

Party invitations are your guests’ first impression of your awesome party so let’s make it count!

Anticipation is half the fun, so create an interesting party invitation that gives them a taste of what’s to come.

In other words, the invitation should hint at your party theme.

If it gives them an interesting introduction to the fun they’ll have when they get to your party, then the excitement and anticipation will grow.

We’ll show you how easy it is to do using a 3D object sent with the invitation that appeals to their senses.

Here are a few ideas as a springboard for your imagination. Which example applies to the party you’re planning? What would excite your particular guests the most? Pique their interest with your invitation, and build the excitement.

Costume Invitations

Invitations are the first impression guests get of your awesome party. We show you how to amaze them with interesting party invitations that appeal to their senses and build excitement. 1

The most interesting party invitation includes something the guest should wear to the party with the party information. That certainly builds excitement!

You can give each guest the same item, or a different item. It doesn’t have to be the whole costume, it can be just a little something that starts them off and they have to use their imagination to complete the ensemble.

The 3D Party Invitation

3D objects that go along with your party them make the most interesting party invitations.

Add a spark of excitement by sending a 3D invitation. This is an invitation with an object attached to, or boxed with it, just like the gumball necklace in the example above.

Most importantly, use an object that goes with the theme of your party.

(Lets be honest: in the competitive world of parties, it’s also to let everyone know that this is going to be the best. party. ever.)

Secondly, use an object and invitation style that will impress your particular guests.

For instance, if you’re planning an indoor hot cocoa party and send sleigh ornaments to guests who would hate a day out in the snow, it might backfire big time. Instead of excitement there could be confusion and trepidation! But a mug ornament, envelope of hot cocoa mix, or mini chocolates would be perfectly wonderful.

A Perfect Example of an Interesting Party Invitation

Your invitation doesn’t have to be costly nor does it have to be elaborate.

For instance, this caramel apple flavored lollipop included with the invitation to a caramel apple party hints at the scents and tastes they’ll experience at the party but is relatively inexpensive.

It appeals to their senses so it really builds anticipation!

  • write the invitation information on a beach ball, deflate and mail for a beach party
  • write the information on an inflatable #1 finger, deflate and mail for a sports party
  • put the invitation in a clear bottle with some sand for a pirate party
  • attach it to a little bottle of a bubbly beverage or champagne bubble bath for a new year’s invitation
  • attach it to a tiara for a princess party

  • attach it to a theme shaped cookie
  • attach it to the handle of a tea cup for a tea party
  • include a tea bag inside the invitation for a tea party

  • attach it to a bag of legos, play dough or other toy that fits the party theme
  • make a light sabre from a pool noodle with duct tape handle for a Star Wars party & attach invitation
  • put the information inside a homemade fortune cookie
  • print a candy bar wrapper for a large chocolate bar with the party information and wrap it around

You get the idea. Just think of an item that represents the theme of your party and attach it – or a toy or cookie or candy version of it – to the invitation.

The Surprise Ball Invitation

The most interesting party invitation is the surprise ball which is essentially a ball of crepe paper with little toys, trinkets and candy wrapped inside.

As the crepe paper is unrolled the gifts fall out until the end when the invitation is revealed.

See our tutorial on how to make a suprise ball invitation.

The 3D surprise ball invitation is very exciting! As you unravel the crepe paper garland, toys, edibles and surprises are found with the invitation at the very end of the roll.

Appeal to the Senses

Take your party invitations to the next level and appeal to more senses than just sight.

Taste

Send a lollipop, other candy or cookie with a flavor that relates to your party theme.

spray your invitation with a scent related to your theme

Scent

It’s as easy as spraying the inside of the envelope with a specific scent – and you can use it again at the door as guests arrive to link the two. There’s pine scent for Christmas invitations, sea breeze for a beach party, cookie dough for a baking party, baby powder scent for a baby shower, and so on.

(Please ensure that your guest does not have a scent allergy!)

Sound

You’ve seen the cards that play music in the card shops, but did you know you can record your own? There are blank Sound Modules for Greeting Cards so you can record your own music or message.

The 10 Second Recordable Sound Module is cheaper, and can fit inside a plushie.

You can send an ocean sound for a beach party, seagulls squawking for a pirate party, horns playing a royal proclamation for a princess party, etc.

Information to Include in Your Party Invitation

When you’re creating your own invitation it’s easy to get so excited about the creative side of it that you miss the practical, so here’s a list of information that should be included in your invitation as a checklist.

  1. Name of the host and/or honoree – the birthday girl or birthday boy
  2. Date of party including Day, Month and Time
  3. Address of party venue – include a map and phone number for the venue if people haven’t been there before
  4. Reason for the party – birthday, anniversary, baby shower, milestone or playday
  5. RSVP – give them the name and phone number for them to call to confirm or decline the invitation, along with a “reply by” date that is a week before the party to give you enough time to chase them down if necessary
  6. “Best wishes only” notice if you don’t expect them to come bearing gifts
  7. Requests:
  • specify if you want them to wear a costume
  • or bring something in particular for the party
  • let them know if its a surprise party
  • tell them about any special terms or events happening at the party
  • extras they’ll need such as a swim suit & towel for a pool party

Bring Smiles to Others While You Have Fun

For an adult party, think of a charity that goes along with the theme of your party or a themed item guests can donate for the local Food Bank.

If collecting money, make it a competition between the guys and gals to see who donates the most!

Here’s the Takeaway

  1. Make a more interesting party invitation by attaching a 3D object to that invitation, or boxing them together.
  2. Choose an object that hints at the theme of your party.
  3. If you want them to wear a costume to your party, include a part or all of it with the invitation.
  4. If the theme object is too big or costly, choose a toy, cookie, candy, or ornament version of the object. Or a mug with a picture of it.
  5. Plan how you will appeal to their senses. Does your object have a scent or will you spray a scent on the invitation? Is there a way to appeal to their taste and sound?
  6. What object would totally excite your guests?

It takes a little brain power to come up with an interesting party invitation that will blow their mind, but it doesn’t necessarily have to blow the budget.
